This course is an introduction to the PSTN signalling system known as Signalling System 7.

Course Goal

After completing this self-study you will have acquired a working
knowledge of SS7.
SS7 is the most complex protocol (set of protocols), in use in the world
today. There are many versions to the protocol used in different parts of
the world. This course will concentrate on the common aspects of those
versions mentioning specific versions only when necessary.
You will learn and recognize basic terminology and terms and be
familiar with the basic call setup process.

Course Objectives

After completing this course, the delegate should be able to:

  • Define the primary functions of Signalling System Number 7 (SS7)
  • Describe the SS7 network in terms of Technology, Network structure and Protocol
  • Recognize the functions of SSPs, STPs and SCPs (definitions later)
  • Differentiate between Bearer Circuits and Signalling Links
  • Explain the purpose of the Message Transfer Part (MTP)
  • Explain the purpose of the ISDN User Part (ISUP)
  • Explain the purpose of Signalling Connection Control Part (SCCP) and
    Transaction Capabilities Application Part (TCAP)
